BEFORE RIVAL WITHIN, THERE WAS COLDSWEAT & BAD DC!
For more than 20 years, ColdSweat was the foundation. Beginning in 2001, the band built lasting friendships, gained experience, played countless shows, and created a catalog of music that became a major part of its members’ lives.
From 2013 to 2016, BAD DC was also making its mark as a modern rock band from Norfolk, Nebraska, performing both original and cover songs at venues throughout the region — all for the love of music.
By 2022, both chapters had run their course. Rather than rebuild the same bands around the same material, Keith Schroetlin, Travis Christiansen, Noah Kalvelage, and Doug Phipps of ColdSweat chose to take everything they had learned and move forward with BAD DC Lead Guitarist Eric Benson, who would step into the role of Rival Within’s frontman.
That decision became the beginning of RIVAL WITHIN.
In June 2026, after more than a decade of playing alongside Keith, Travis, and the band, Doug Phipps made the difficult decision to step away from Rival Within. His bass duties were then taken over by Adam Esparza, bringing a familiar face and longtime connection back into the fold.

Meet THE BAND!
Rival Within is a hard rock and metal band from Nebraska, formed in July 2022 from more than two decades of experience, friendships, and a shared passion for making music.
Rather than simply continuing what came before, Rival Within was built with a fresh identity, a new sound, and a commitment to pushing beyond the past. The result is a powerful combination of soaring vocals, crushing guitars, aggressive bass, and hard-hitting drums — blending classic metal and hard rock influences with a modern edge.
The band released its debut EP … Mark of the Witch in 2023, and the follow-up EP … Always Burning in 2025. They continue to build a growing catalog of original music while bringing its high-energy live performances to stages throughout the region.
Today, Rival Within is focused on what comes next — writing and recording new material for an upcoming full-length release, creating aggressive and visually driven music videos, and continuing to deliver a powerful live experience to fans.

Eric Benson — Vocals
Eric Benson brings a powerful and distinctive voice to Rival Within, with a range that can go from hard-hitting rock to some seriously high notes. He began playing in bands in 2010 and helped form Rival Within in July 2022 after coming from Bad DC.
His biggest musical influence is Iron Maiden, which comes through in his appreciation for powerful vocals, melody, and classic metal.
Known for: Loving to hit the high notes!
Keith Schroetlin — Rhythm Guitar / Backup Vocals
Keith Schroetlin brings more than two decades of experience to Rival Within. He began playing in bands in 2001 and spent more than 20 years as a founding member of ColdSweat before helping launch Rival Within in July 2022.
His biggest musical influence is Metallica, and his rhythm guitar work helps provide the foundation for Rival Within’s sound.
Known for: Being the story-teller of the band!
Noah Kalvelage — Lead Guitar
Noah Kalvelage brings a fresh energy to Rival Within as the band’s lead guitarist. Rival Within is Noah’s first band, and he began playing guitar when he was very young while he helped formed the band in July 2022.
Influenced heavily by Lamb of God, Noah brings an aggressive and melodic approach to his playing, helping shape the guitar sound that has become a key part of Rival Within.
Known for: His sense of humor and love of making people laugh, Noah may be serious when the music starts — but he’s usually the first one to crack a joke when the music stops!
Adam Esparza — Bass
Adam Esparza brings a powerful and aggressive approach to the low end of Rival Within. Having played in bands since 2005, Adam previously shared the stage with Rival Within members during his time with ColdSweat and officially joined Rival Within in June 2026.
Influenced heavily by Whitechapel, Adam brings an aggressive bass style that adds another layer of weight and intensity to the band’s sound. With Adam joining the lineup, Rival Within continues to build on its foundation while pushing its sound into the future.
Known for: Serious gym & bowling time … and bringing the muscle to Rival Within!
Travis Christiansen — Drums
Travis Christiansen has been behind the drums since 2001, bringing more than two decades of experience, hard-hitting rhythms, and relentless energy to Rival Within. A longtime and founding member of ColdSweat, Travis carried that experience into Rival Within and helped form the band in July 2022.
Influenced by Sevendust drummer Morgan Rose, Travis has a passion for powerful, driving drumbeats that give Rival Within its foundation and energy. Away from the kit, you’ll likely find him putting in work at the gym and staying focused on health and fitness.
Known For: Keeping the band focused, pushing everyone forward, and keeping the vision aimed at what’s next!
